Enamel Pin OBSESSED!

If you haven’t seen these little dudes bouncing around Etsy, Instagram, or retail stores, you will soon. I recently became obsessed with these little accessories. They’re like the ~fancy~ grown up versions of buttons. They’re more durable and won’t fall off your backpack, but that also means they’re a tad more expensive. That’s why I have such a big problem. I can’t afford all the pins I love like I could with buttons!

I’ve even considered designing my own. You just create the design and a company can make the pin for you. The catch, once again, is the dolla dolla billz. So since I can’t do anything to satisfy my love for these pins, I’ll share some of my favourites here.

If you are unfamiliar with the axolotl, make yourself familiar. This deep-sea creature is actually that adorable and I just want to see it happy. It recently became popular online but actually learned about it years and years ago by watching Planet Earth like a nerd. What a hipster.

I grew up in the desert and I have an fondness for cacti and succulents. This pin is a little bit of California/Nevada love. I have a little cactus friend but it’s kind of wonky-looking now.

But at the same time I’m also very proud of being from Toronto and the best way to show that is obviously a trash panda. Our back yard has been ravaged by them. They’re so cute but gtfo!

I want this pin because it conveys that 1. I like Jurassic Park, and 2. I, too, am a clever girl.

When I was around middle school age, I got really into anime and started drawing obsessively. While I try to move away from anime stylistically, Cardcaptor Sakura has a special place in my heart. I think all her cool battle outfits is what did it for me. She’s my favourite magical girl. ❤

I don’t think the design is associated with Bee and Puppycat but this is definitely the bee off of Bee’s sweater.

Plus 25% of the proceeds of that pin sale goes to The Pollinator Partnership! Saving the bees is cool.

I think Lion is one of my favourite characters on Steven Universe. Fluffy pink friend. Mr. Universe is also fluffy and pink.

What kind of pins would you cover your stuff in?

Retail Therapy & Chill: Etsy Faves

Like many others, when I feel down I fill the void in my soul with material goods. But you may recall from a previous post that I am in no position to be buying:

a) anything that is not immediately useful
b) anything I can’t use for work
c) anything

But am I going to let my pesky finances stand in the way of retail glory? You know me better than that. Of course I did buy some actual things of varying usefulness (thank you, Visa) but I also quelled my online shopping demons by going fave-crazy on Etsy. Nothing useful enough to give away my dollars but some very amusing items for a maybe possibly later date. Here’s what I’ve been loving on Etsy!

Grocery Totes

Don’t get confused; I don’t go grocery shopping. I just like the idea of these cute little totes because it makes me pine for the day where I’m a strong independent lady that gets her own shit done. Like grocery shopping.

Planner Stamps/Stickers

My planner is my lifeline, especially when I fall into funks when I can’t keep my own life in order. I like to take the time to organize and label and pre-write dates (especially pay days!). I’ve been falling out of sync with my planner and I think some stamps or stickers might brighten things up and help me stay organized.

$3.80 CAD

$5.58 CAD

The pay day sticker is kawaii af but if you are a boring person and want a simple little stamp, there’s always this option. Or you can look for a set that meets your planning needs!

Wax Seals

Listen. I know it’s not 1820, but sometimes it’s nice to be fancy. I’ve always liked that people had their own seals that were representative of themselves or their family. Plus seals are so pretty and elegant and surprisingly not as expensive as you would think. After looking at a number of designs I saw this peacock feather pattern and I decided it must be mine one day. (It’d be a nice touch for this year’s Christmas cards too!)

$13.20 CAD

Book Owner Stamps

Now that I’m becoming increasingly picky with what books I keep and what I donate, I feel the need to claim the keepers in a more decisive way than simply writing my name in them. Not all my books; just the ones that have a spot in my heart’s library*.

$33.66 CAD

I love the classy and elegant script that will mark my books as mine but you can get a stamp that really speaks to your personality. You can go quite ornate, or simple and cute. I actually quite like the idea of a snail stamp for my books as a wink to my embarrassing reading speed.

* “heart’s library” is probably the cheesiest thing I’ve ever said, PLEASE forgive me

Bath Bombs

I’m sorry.
I’m sorry.
I’m sorry.
I’m (not really) sorry.

I didn’t even like baths until I discovered bath bombs. The fact that I know I’ll never get the tub as clean as I want it pre-bath is a huge deterrent. But guess what! If you get bath bombs with a ton of shit in them, you won’t even notice that stray hair floating by. Plus they’re relaxing af and smell real nice. Great for shitty times. I found a vendor on Etsy that’s been selling Steven Universe themed bath bombs and I want them all.

$6.06 CAD

They seem to use scents that are pertinent to the show and characters. There’s a bath bomb for Pearl, Garnet, Sadie, and Lapis!

Now that you have a sense of the dumb eclectic shit I browse on Etsy you may understand why I chose not to buy them. But man, hitting that fave button sure feels good, and if I really find the need to spend $30 on a grocery bag then I know where to go.

Charmed by Charlie

Like most people in their mid-20’s I am well underpaid, so when I passed by the Charming Charlie storefront with chandeliers and gorgeous purses I almost kept walking thinking the store was out of my price range. But it doesn’t cost anything to look, right? I dragged my barely-willing boyfriend into the shop with me and looked at their array of accessories. They carry bags of all sizes, jewelry, hair accessories, scarves, and much more, and to my surprise and utter delight, it was all within my price range! I took a sweep around the store looking to see if I could find the most expensive item. All I found was a large bag that cost $45 (CDN).

I found that their merchandise was all very expensive-looking (and feeling!) with a surprisingly low price tag, and they catered to several different styles. From cutesy to classy, you’ll be able to find something that suits you. I got myself this piece for just $10!

Something I love about the store is that they separate their merchandise based on colour scheme so you can hone in on what colours you like to accessorize with — so if you wear a lot of red as it is, you can look at golds or navys to compliment your wardrobe.

I particularly loved their bags as well. Though they were all different sizes, even the small ones seemed to be made with space efficiency in mind. Lots of pockets and zippers to stash your stuff. I fell madly in love with this small bag in vibrant turquoise.

charming-charlie-bag-front charming-charlie-back-bag charming-charlie-inside-bag

As you can see it’s quite compact but has lots of little pockets! The seam between the two main sections can also function as a pocket since it’s completely seamed in. It fits my Samsung Galaxy S4 perfectly (a Note may have some trouble fitting) but is a bit too small for a wallet. If I use this bag, my money and cards are going to be loose in the bag, unless I get a tiny card holder. The strap is detachable and it came with a clutch strap as well so I have the option to use it as a side bag or a wristlet. And the price tag? $25.

With my two purchases after taxes, I spent just under $40 and got a couple of really impressive pieces that looks like I spent much more money. I am so glad for this discovery! The life of my accessory shopping has gone from Claire’s, to its big sister Icing, and I’ll be dipping into Charming Charlie for a few more classic pieces that won’t break my underfunded bank account.

Unfortunately for many Canadians, getting to a Charming Charlie store will be a difficulty. The only stores open in Ontario are in Brampton and Vaughan, but online shopping is available everywhere!
